Free frog activities, crafts, and printables

Frogs are amphibians. Almost all amphibians spend the first part of their lives underwater. When they change into adults, they are able to live on land. The frogs breath through their skin. Their skin is designed to let water in and out. The frog's tongue is sticky. The frog can shoot out ist tongue and capture insects, minnows, eartworms, and spiders. Frogs hibernate in the mud in the bottom of the pond during winter.

Sticky Tongue

Make our frog puppet craft with a long narrow paper tongue. Attach a double sided tape on the end of the paper tongue. Have children use the frog puppet to pick up bread crumbs.

At the Pond

Read a book about the pond life to your children. After the reading ask children to list all animals that live at the pond. Invite your children to act out the movements and sounds of the pond creatures. (Swim like a fish, hop like a frog, crawl like insects, lither like a snake.)

Make your own pond
If it's not possible to visit a pond create a pond enviroment. Use pizza box and place a deep dish baking form inside. Add some dirt/sand all around the baking dish (pond.) Add some dirt or potting soil and Easter grass inside the "pond." Then, fill the baking dish with water and make lilypads out of green craft foam. Add vinyl or plastic pond critters - frogs, snakes, turtles, bugs, and plastic plants. Let children play and explore the pond life.

The Life Cycle of a Frog

From egg to tadpole to frog. Children are fascinated about the life cycle of a frog. Read the book Fish Is Fish by Leo Lionni to learn about the life cycle of a frog. Let them re-create the different stages with playdough or let children draw the different stages on a piece of paper. Let children explain each stage.

Leap Like a Frog

Cut lily pad shapes out of green craft paper and lay around the room. Let children pretend to be frogs and leap from lily pad to lily pad.

Count and Hop

Print and or write numbers from one to five (or ten) on index cards. Hold up a card and let children pretend to be frogs and hop the number of times indicated ont he card. Clap your hand and count the hops.

Frog Finger Plays:

Five Little Frogs

Five little frogs sitting on a well. (Hold up five fingers.)

One peeked in and down he fell. (Hold up one finger.)

Four frogs jumped high. (With hand holding up 4 fingers, jump up.)

Four frogs jumped low. (With hand holding up 4 fingers, jump low.)

Four frogs jumped everywhere, to and fro! (With both hands jump forward, sideways, backwards.)

Continue until none are left.

"Five Little Speckled Frogs"

Use finger play or let children act out the "Five Little Speckled Frogs" rhyme. Have five children sit on a strip of tape on the floor. Let one "frog" jump into the pool until the end of the poem.

Five little speckled frogs, (Hold five fingers "frog" on top of your
other arm "log.")
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating the most delicious bugs. Yum! Yum!

One jumped into the pool, (jump a finger off the log into the pool)
Where it was nice and cool.
Now there are how many frogs? FOUR! (Hold up four fingers)

Four little speckled frogs,
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating the most delicious bugs. Yum! Yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool.
Now there are how many frogs? THREE!
