Five Little Snowmen Felt Story and Math Activity

Enjoy this felt rhyme and pattern for five little snowmen with big red bows. Follow-up with the math extension activity giving chidlren practice with the numbers 1 through 5 and their quantities.
What you need:
  • Snowman pattern printable
  • Orange and black felt
  • Small red bows
  • Black marker
  • Small black pom-poms
  • Felt board
  • Glue
  • Scissors
What you do:
Print the Snowman pattern and trace on to felt.
Cut out each item and assemble snowmen. Add a different number of buttons (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) to each snowman. 
Preschool Activities: 
Place the five little snowmen on the board. Let children describe the snowmen: the shape and color of the hats, how many buttons, etc.
Preschool Activities: 
As the rhyme progresses, take one snowman off the board.
Place the activity in a classroom center and allow children to act out the felt rhyme individually or in pairs.

One little snowman melted away.
Repeat verse with 4, 3, and 2 snowmen. End with the following verse:

He wore a hat and a big red bow. 
Out came the sun and it was hot all day. 
The last little snowman melted away.

Numbers 1 - 5 
Counting & Cardinality
K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
K.CC.4c Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Preschool Activities: 
First, have children count the buttons on the snowmen.
Then, let them place the snowmen in sequencial order from 1-5.
Next let them find the matching cards (numbers, number words, and number of buttons) and place them under each snowman.
