Target Learning Skill(s): Sequencing Story Events

K.RL.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

Preschool Activities:

The Mitten is a well-known folktale that has been retold and illustrated by several children’s authors and illustrators.  KidsSoup offers many resources to use with your students when including this story in your curriculum.  One of the most versatile of these resources is the set of sequencing cards. Here are 3 ideas for using the cards in your classroom.

Preschool Activities:

Activity #1:

Print and laminate 2 sets of the sequencing cards.  Lay the cards face down on the table and play a traditional memory game.  As the children make matches in the game, they can retell that part of the story.

Preschool Activities:

Activity #2:

Print and laminate 2 sets of the sequencing cards. Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of the cards.  Count down and let the groups race to put the story in order.  This can be used as a transition or line-up activity.

Preschool Activities:

Activity #3:

Print and laminate 2 sets of sequencing cards. As the children come to circle time or other large group time, hand each of them one of the sequencing cards.  Once everyone has a card, have them arrange themselves in the correct order of the story.  Display a second set of cards in the correct order as a reference for the children. Collect the cards, mix them up, and pass them out again.  This time, remove a few cards from the display board or cover the display all together.  Repeat as many times as the children would like.  If you have more children than cards, assign the remaining children as checkers.  They can make sure their friends are in the order that correectly matches the story events.
