Mitten Lacing Activity

What you need:
Printable mitten lacing card (laminated for durability)
Hole punch
Yarn, shoelaces, or ribbon (18–24 inches)
Tape (to wrap the yarn tip for easier threading)
Optional: crayons or markers for decorating first
Learning Goals and Standards:
- Strengthen fine motor muscles needed for writing
- Practice hand-eye coordination
- Follow simple steps and directions
- Build perseverance and confidence
What you do:
Preparation:
- Print the mitten template on cardstock.
- Optional: Let children color the mitten first.
- Punch holes along the dotted line around the mitten.
Activity:
- Give each child one mitten and a piece of yarn.
- Show how to start:
“Push the yarn through the first hole and pull it all the way through.” - Encourage the children to lace in and out through each hole around the mitten.
- Children continue lacing until they return to the starting point.
- Tie the ends together or tape them to the back.
Teacher Tips
Model the first 2–3 holes before letting children try independently.
For beginners, use stiffer yarn, plastic lacing cords, or actual shoelaces.
Pair children up for “helping hands” if the group needs extra support.
Celebrate effort, not perfection—every stitched mitten is unique!
