What you need:

Selection of gift bows
Shoe box
Wrapping paper
Scissors
Velcro dots with sticky backs

Learning Goals and Standards:

  • Develop fine motor skills (grasping, pressing, sticking, pulling)
  • Strengthen hand–eye coordination
  • Practice counting, adding, and subtracting

What you do:

Prepare the Box:

Wrap the shoe box with wrapping paper.

Attach the Velcro:

Stick one side of the Velcro dots onto the gift bows and the matching sides onto the wrapped box.

Play and Explore:

Invite children to stick the bows onto the box and then remove them again.
This builds finger strength, control, and coordination.

Extensions / Variation – Addition and Subtraction: Make 10

  • Use 10 gift bows.
  • Have children count all the bows.
  • Use a spinner or dice to choose a number.
  • Have children place that many bows on the box.
  • Ask:
    • “How many bows are on the box?”
    • “How many are left?”
  • Let children record their number sentences or talk through their math thinking.
