What you need:

Boxes and Bows Rhyming printables
Scissors
Rhyming Words Worksheet


Learning Goals and Standards:

  • Recognizes and produces rhyming words.
  • Strengthens phonological awareness and listening skills.
  • Expands vocabulary through sound play.
  • Practices turn-taking and focus in small group settings.

What you do:

Preparation:
Print the Boxes and Bows Rhyming printables and cut them out.

Instructions:

  • Show each picture to the children and say its name together.
  • Choose one picture (for example, hat). Say the word “hat” aloud together.
  • Ask: “Can you think of any words that rhyme with hat?” (cat, bat, sat, etc.)
  • Let children find a bow with a picture that rhymes with hat and place it on top of the matching gift box.
  • Continue until all gift boxes have matching rhyming bows.

Independent Play:

  • Place the game in your reading or literacy center for children to play in pairs or small groups.

Extension:

Give each child a Rhyming Words Worksheet.

Let children circle the rhyming words on each row.
Use this as a simple assessment of rhyme recognition.
