"Pop! I'm a Flower" Puppets and Rhyme

Children love making tissue paper flowers. Here, they turn them into puppets to use as props as they read and recite the simple rhyme "Pop! I'm a Flower."

"Pop! I'm a Flower" Puppets and Rhyme

What you need:

Toilet paper rolls
Green pipe cleaners
Paint or craft foam
Craft foam letters
Colorful tissue paper (cut into squares)
Chart paper
Black marker
Stapler

Scissors

What you do:

Preschool Activities:

Prepare a cardboard roll for each child by covering it with craft foam and stapling the foam into place. Give each child two craft foam letter ps and one craft foam letter o. Have children use the letters to spell out "pop" on the sides of their cardboard rolls without the staples. Set the cardboard rolls aside.

Then, show children how to make tissue paper flowers from green pipe cleaners and equally-sized squares of tissue paper. Follow these steps:

Preschool Activities:

Stack several squares of tissue paper.

Preschool Activities:

Fold tissue paper stack like a fan.

Preschool Activities:

Twist tip of green pipe cleaner around center of folded tissue paper, leaving remainder long to make a stem.

Preschool Activities:

Gently pull tissue papers apart to form flower petals.

Preschool Activities:

Have each child gently push his/her tissue paper flower inside his/her cardboard roll from the top down, leaving part of the flower sticking out at the top. Remind children not to push their flowers all the way down because they'll get stuck inside the tubes.

Preschool Activities:

Write the rhyme "Pop, I'm a Flower" on chart paper. Have children hold onto their flower puppets while reciting the rhyme. Explain that when they hear the word "Pop!" in the last line, they can push their flowers up out of the cardboard rolls. Remind them to continue to hold on to the ends of their stems so that the flowers do not topple onto the floor.

I'm a seed that's in the dirt.
I get sunshine and water.
I grow a stem, two leaves and then,
Pop! I'm a flower!
