Layered Circular Flowers

Preschool Activities:

Use the Flower Petal Pattern from the KidSoup.com library to create enough circles of each size for each child in your class. Use a variety of colors and let children choose which colors they would like to use.

Preschool Activities:

After children have selected their colors, have them line their circles up from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest.

Then, let each child choose a pipe cleaner. You can offer them a variety of colors or use shades of green for a more realistic feel. Instruct children to push their pipe cleaners through the centers of their largest circles. If your paper is too thick for the children to easily stick their pipe cleaners through, use a sharpened pencil or paper clip to make small holes.

Preschool Activities:

Have children locate the next largest circle in their circle sets and add it to the pipe cleaner. Have children continue this process until all circles have been threaded. Help children take the ends of their pipe cleaners and fold them over to create their flower centers.

Preschool Activities:

To make the activity more challenging for older children, provide the patterns and have the children trace and cut out their own circles. You can also use a different shape to create the flowers. A third way to enhance the activity is to turn it into an art activity by giving children a light color of paper for the circles and a darker color pen to create designs.

Variation:

Use painted paper from the easel and trace and cut out different size circles. Let children choose five to six different sizes and use a pipe cleaner to assemble them. Make a 3-D flower artwork by glueing the circles with the pipe cleaner on a piece of craft paper. Let children use markers to finish drawing the flower.
