How Many Fish? Measuring

How Many Fish? Measuring

What you need:

Ocean Animals printables
Goldfish crackers
How many fish? Recording sheet
Small container
Tray
Pencil

Skills: Measuring and eye-hand coordination

What you do:

Print ocean animals on heavy paper and cut out. Print the How many fish? Recording sheet. Put goldfish crackers in a small container. Place all items on the tray

Discuss with children how we can tell how long an object is. Demonstrate to children how they can use the goldfish to measure how long their foot is. Pick one child and place the goldfish along the side of his/her foot. Count together how long his/her foot is (Your foot is 6 fish long!). Hand out a handful of goldfish and let children measure their own foot. Record the measurements on the board.

Ocean Animal Measuring
Place the ocean animal cards and the container with the goldfish on the table. Hand out a recording sheet to each child. Explain to children that they will measure the length of the ocean animals. Choose one card and demonstrate how to place the goldfish below to measure its length. Record the number of goldfish on the "How many fish? Recording sheet."

Patterns:

Kindergarten Common Core State Standards:

K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
