What you need:

Fish printables
Craft sticks

What you do:

Print Fish printable and cut out. Let children color the b/w fish. Then, glue a craft stick to the back of the fish. Choose five children and let them choose a fish puppet to hold and pretend to swim in the sea. The teacher holds the shark puppet. Recite the rhyme together and snap one fish with the shark at a time.

Teasing Mr. Shark: “You can’t catch me! You can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Shark
As quiet as can be and…SNAP!
He snapped one fish out from the sea.

Four little fish swimming in the sea…
Three little fish swimming in the sea…
Two little fish swimming in the sea…

One little fish swimming in the sea,
Teasing Mr. Shark: “You can’t catch me! You can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Shark
As quiet as can be and….SNAP!

And away swims Mr. Shark as full as he can be!

Place puppets in your literacy center for children to retell the rhyme. 

 

Math Extension

Use the puppets and rhyme to practice substraction within 5.

He snapped (1-5 number of fish) out from the sea.

Let children remove the number of fish. How many fish are left?
