The Three Little Pigs is a classic fairy tale that has been told in many different versions and styles over the years. Introduce children to the tale as it is told through the voices of different authors with different styles. View our Three Little Pigs Book suggestions below.

Three Little Pigs Circle Time Activities

Explain that male pigs are called boars and female pigs are called sows. Ask children, "Do you know what baby pigs are called? Yes, baby pigs are called piglets. When a pig weighs more than 120 pounds, it is called a hog." Discuss that pigs are smart, they squeal and grunt, and that they like to roll in the mud to protect themselves from the sun and insects. Read the book The Three Little Pigs to children. Discuss whether the pigs in the story are real pigs. Why not? Let children explain.

Reread the story for several days. Allow children to become involved in reading and retelling the story. Use puppets or props to act out the story. Use the story printables on your felt board.

Pig Centers and Pretend Play Areas

Pig House
Appliance stores give out refrigerator and freezer cartons. Cut windows and doors from the carton and let children paint the house with paint and small paint rollers. Children can decorate the inside walls with wallpaper or drawings. Make curtains out of fabric scraps if desired.

Wooden Block Area
Provide wooden blocks and let children construct different homes. Encourage children to use lots of blocks.

The Three Little Pig Home Construction
Provide building materials such as sticks, straw, Lego blocks, glue, tape, and construction paper and let children try to rebuild the pigs houses. Extension: Let children construct a house strong enough so that the wolf won't be able to blow it down. Let children work together.

Science Exploration
Add balance scale and have samples of straw, sticks, and small pieces of brick for children to weigh, etc.

My Home
Invite families to share photos of their home. Collect different pictures of homes. Real estate brochures and home improvement magazines are a great source. Mount pictures on cardboard. Let children sort the pictures by house size, number of doors, windows, type of roof, single family, multi family, etc.

The Three Little Pigs Story Theater

Create puppets out of wooden spoons and let children re-tell the story.

Fifer Pig

I built my house of straw, I built my house of hay

I toot my flute, I don't give a hoot

And play around all day

Fiddler Pig

I built my house of sticks, I built my house of twigs

With a hey-diddle-diddle, I play on the fiddle

And dance all kinds of jigs

Practical Pig

I built my house of stone, I built my house of bricks

I have no chance to sing and dance

For work and play don't mix

Fifer and Fiddler Pig

He don't take no time to play, time to play, time to play

All he does is work all day

Practical Pig

You can play and laugh and fiddle,

Don't you think you'll make me sore,

I'll be safe and you'll be sorry

When the wolf comes to your door

Fifer and Fiddler Pig

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

Big bad wolf

Big bad wolf Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

Big bad wolf

Big bad wolf

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

I'll punch him in the nose

I'll tie him in a knot

I'll kick him in the shin

We'll put him on the spot

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

Big bad wolf

Big bad wolf

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf

Pigs Rhymes and Songs:

This Little Piggy
This little piggy
can wiggle its ears,
Wiggle its nose,
And wiggle its toes.

This little piggy can
jump up and down,
turn around,
And touch the ground.

This little piggy
can grunt when it's sad,
Squeal when its mad,
And oink when it's glad.

This little piggy can
eat very fast,
Splish and splash,
Then sleep in the grass.
